…It’s Free Medicine!

OH,LEAD ME! totally, absolutely, positively, believe in the uplifting power of Laughter! One of my favorite quotes, which happens to be the signature in my email is, “Laugh all you can, it’s free Medicine” (Anonymous). Another memorable verse of mine which affirms this is “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22). The effects laughter has in many facets of our lives (namely mental, physical, emotional, spiritual) is obviously well documented and reported. We’ve researched, heard, read, and strongly believe that laughter helps worries and stress fade away and bring forth the feeling of joy and happiness. I mean talk about Therapy, right?!?

WE NEED to find reasons to laugh every day even if it means turning the table and laughing at ourselves. In fact my family has a weird habit of laughing at each other – our weaknesses, failures, woes, adventures, behaviors, certain traits and experiences past and present are all open to ridicule. I guess it just makes the struggles of life more bearable.

My late Mother was the ultimate comedian! She had an incredible gift of narrating simple tales and fill in so much humor; entertaining, clever, interesting and hilarious details … We would virtually laugh our lungs out …  Seriously!! The typical scenario on such occassions was  a bunch of us gathered around her laughing uncontrollably and seemingly helpless with teary eyes, falling on the floor, squeezing our abdomen, while struggling to hold urine from gushing out; imagine that… Ohhh, is that an absolute “Spirit Uplifter” or what!?!

Another adorable memory sticks to mind: I clearly remember as a teen growing up, my father brought home a beautiful poem printed on a poster-size paper entitled Take Time and pasted it on the wall leading to our hallway (a strategic position which was easily visible to the eyes that walked by). The line about “Laughter”  read Take time to Laugh, it is the Music of the soul“! I can’t emphasize enough how transforming the entire poem was but specifically, how liberating it was (and still is) to know that we are ABLE to MAKE OUR OWN MUSIC simlpy by LAUGHING!

Please, let’s keep the music on auto-play and Laugh all we can, if for no other reason but because after all, IT”S FREE and IT”S GOOD MEDICINE!!!
